It is with regret that we are announcing we are pulling cans of Burnside with a package date of Feb. 4, 2020 from the market. This week we discovered a risk of over-carbonated cans due to continued fermentation in samples our brewery laboratory maintained warm as part of our normal quality checks. Care should be taken if you have cans that have been kept warm. This batch passed our micro checks and sensory evaluations. However, we also monitor the gravity of the beer over time, and we saw drops in gravity in later samples, indicating that the beer was continuing to ferment in the can.
When cans are kept cold, it slows the rate of over-carbonation, and storage in warm conditions will accelerate it. We have no concern over the taste or the safety of the beer itself, just the potential to over-carbonate with the pressure in the cans possibly causing the seal on the lid to fail. Therefore, we recommend that you handle the cans with care. Check the date code on the bottom, as this only affects cans with a date code on the bottom of the can of 2/4/20. If you have any, please chill them and then open them carefully before you pour them out.
We are committed to being transparent about our beer and want to address this concern directly. These cans were sold in Maine at stores and our tasting room, and with limited quantities in New Hampshire, Connecticut, Rhode Island and New Jersey. They were sold during February, March and April.
